June is pride month and it marks the anniversary of the Stonewall Riots that ignited a firestorm of LGBTQ activism and elevated the fight for equality. There are pride parades and events all over in the month of June. Back in 1978, artist Gilbert Baker, an openly gay man and drag queen designed the first rainbow flag. And elected official, Harvey Milk, urged him to use the flag as a symbol of pride. Each color had its own meaning,hot pink for sex, red for life, orange for healing, yellow for sunlight, green for nature, turquoise for art, indigo for harmony, and violet for spirit. The rainbow flag is still used a primary symbol for LGBTQ pride and all of Pride month’s festivities.
