How To Pick Out Your First Vibrator

Buying your first vibrator can be a super intimating experience. Weather you are young and figuring out your body and what you find pleasure in or if you are older and wanting to explore new things it can be super overwhelming. There are so many options, so many different sensations, how do you know what you will like? Here is a little guide to help you pick out your first vibrator.

But first a story. When I turned 18 I wanted to do something I couldn’t do at 17, for me that was going to the sex store. The only sex shop I knew about was 30 mins south of my town. I knew right where it was from trips to the Traders World flea market with my family. Traders World was easy to remember, because it had an anatomical correct horse statue above their sign. To a high school student this was a notable sign. Across the highway was the Solid Rock Church. You knew it because of it 3 story tall sculpture of Jesus in its front lawn with arms in the air that we all nicknamed “touchdown Jesus”  But right behind touchdown Jesus was a small sign, but you could still see it from the highway. A sign that read Hustler.

Hustler Store

So on my 18th birthday I drove to the Hustler store with my 17 year old friend. Back then sex shops were very different than they are today. They weren’t well lit with shelves of perfectly placed female friendly vibrators and a young, feminist staff. They were stores tucked away in the middle of nowhere, always next to a strip club and filled with the kind of people that my family told me to stay away from growing up. Or at least that was what I was always told. But I was an adult now, I was going to do this. We pulled up to the store and to my surprise, the cars in the parking lot were pretty nice. The store had huge windows with mannequins dressed in lingerie and other Hustler logo merchandise. The store was bright and set up like my favorite clothing stores in the mall with racks of cute clothes, and costumes in the front. But I wanted to go behind the wall to the true adult section.

They wouldn’t let my friend in because she was only 17. So I walked behind the wall looking back at my friend now standing alone in the door frame trying to take a peek in. This area was huge. Walls and wall filled with toys. A giant glass case filled with beautiful blown glass dildos. I walked back and forth a few times along the wall looking at all the options. There must have been a thousand. How do I know what I will like? I stopped to look at a bigger than life rubber fist that was longer than my elbow. All I can remember thinking was “wtf is that?” But then I had a really cute sales assistant come ask me what I was looking for. I told him it was my first time and I wanted to buy a vibrator. He said no problem, we have as awesome section for that. And after going through my choices he helped me decide on a pink, glittery insertable vibrator that I proudly carried out of the store in my Hustler bag to show my friend.

Now a days the sex shops are much more inviting and the stigma of going to one is long gone. And now you have the choice to shop online from the comfort of your couch. And have it delivered in a plain brown box so no one knows what is inside. But the moral of my story is that the sales people are here to help. They do this all the time. They have tried a lot of different toys and they aren’t afraid to tell you about them. So if you are struggling in you decision, then just reach out and ask. We will help you decide.

Ok onto my guide.

First, ask yourself what kind of pleasure am I looking for?

The best way to do this is to experiment a bit with your hands before you start shopping. What feels nice? Do you like the feeling of something softer touching your clit? Or fast? Or something inside? Do you want both?

From there ask yourself what is my budget?

There are great options from just a few dollars to several hundred dollars, so picking a budget is a good way to help narrow down your choices. But vibrators are a bit of a try it, buy it kind of thing. So if you buy something and don’t’ like it, you can’t return it. So I recommend for your first vibrator to keep it on the lower end of your budget, until you figure out a little bit more of what you like.

Next, ask what kind of functions are important to you?

So this can be a tricky one if you have never used anything before. But there are a few key functions that you can search for.

1.     Do you want to use this with a partner or alone? Or both?

2.     Do you want to use is in the bath or shower?

3.     Do you want it to be rechargeable? Or are battery OK?

4.     Do you want vibration only? Or do you want options like thrusting or rotating shafts?

Then think about material

It is important to only buy body safe materials. So, you don’t get an infection or something worse. I know what you are thinking, “aren’t all vibrators and dildos body safe?” The answer to that is definitely not. Which, is why it is important to only buy your sex toys from a reputable shop that cares about your health and wellbeing. Unfortunately, that does not include Amazon, but that is a discussion for another day. The White Unicorn only carries body safe materials from top of the line manufactures and never contain Phthalates. Which are known to cause damage to your liver, kidneys, lungs and reproductive system. Also, there are some other types of materials that are just not recommended to be inserted or used inside the body. It can disrupt your natural PH, get lost up there or hurt your insides. None of this sounds like a pleasurable experience. So lets stick to only body safe materials.

Some types of materials that are body safe.

Silicone- This is a very common material to be used in sex toys. It is soft to the touch, easy to clean, doesn’t contain any harmful chemicals, and can be molded into a variety of shapes and sizes. Important to note to only use water- based lubricants with silicone toys. Silicone lubricants will break down the silicone on your new toy.

Glass- Glass is a great option for someone that is looking for something more ridged. It is easy to clean, and can be heated up or frozen for a different sensation.

Stainless Steel- This is a material you normally see in butt plugs and anal toys. Also very easy to clean.

ABS plastic- A lot of inexpensive toys are made of plastic or have portions in plastic. These toys are good for people on a budget or looking for just clitoral stimulation. They do make toys out of ABS plastic that are insertable as well but I would recommend to sticking to one of the other materials if you want to use it internally.

TPR, TPE, Jelly- These are common inexpensive material to use on sex toys. They are made in tons of colors and can be very realistic looking. Back when I bought my first vibrator most sex toys were made out of this. But over the years the market has leaned away from them because this material is porous. Which means, that similar to a sponge, it can hold bacteria and body fluids on it even after you wash it. Super gross. So, I don’t recommend using Jelly materials for anything inside of you, because they are very difficult to wash. If you must, then use a condom on the toy and throw it out when you start to see any signs of wear.

Ok onto shape

Do you want to use your toy internally or externally or both? Do you want it to be small and hand held. Or for insertable toys how big do you want it? How girthy do you want it? If you don’t know then I recommend something smaller at first, you can always go bigger later. From my experience woman usually think they want their sex toy bigger than they actually do.

Lastly, a few different types of vibrators to help you choose

Dual Stimulator Vibrators- These are more commonly known as rabbit vibrators. Because they have a section on them that loosely looks like rabbit ears for clitoral stimulation. But not all dual stimulators are rabbits, the part for clitoral stimulation can be shaped in many different ways and have different kind of feelings or sensations. Then they have an insertable shaft that can also have different functions like rotating, thrusting, come hilter or pulsating. When you insert a dual stimulator the clitoral stimulator should nestle up against your clitoral to give sensations to both your clit and G-spot at the same time, hence the dual part.

Wand vibrators-  Wand vibrators were made popular back in the 70’s with house wives because they were discreet and you could buy them at places other than sex shops. Only there they were marketed as Massagers. Whatever you decide to massage with your wand these are excellent options for people that want strong external vibrations. The are hand held and have a bulbous shape on the end. Wand vibrators are some of the strongest vibrations on the market.

Bullet vibrator- Bullets are small in size usually resembling an oversized pill. They are hand held vibrators that are great to use for external stimulation alone or with a partner. They can be battery operated or rechargeable and can be fairly strong depending on the brand. These tend to be cheaper toys that are great for first time buyer to experiment with.

Pressure Wave Vibrators- These are a newer type of vibrator that has a different kind of external feeling than your traditional vibrations. Pressure wave vibrators are for external use, but can come as a dual stimulator as well. They use newer technology to pulsated air at your clitoris without ever touching it. This feels similar to the sensation of someone sucking on your clit.

Vibrating Dildos- This is an toy for internal stimulation of the G-spot without the extra “rabbit ears” These can come in many different. Types of materials and can be life like or more abstract.

Clitoral Vibrators- These are vibrators that are meant to be used just for clitoral stimulation. So an overarching category for any type of vibrator that provides just clitoral vibrations. They can be hand held or bigger and come in any type of material.
